How FMCSA Medical Examiner Certification Works

Complete Training*

Start by registering for our NRCME Accredited Training course (live or on-demand). Once complete, you will receive a certificate of completion that is valid for 3 years. Upload this to your NRCME account at least 24 hours before registering for your NRCME certification test.

Choose Testing Site

Register for your NRCME certification test with Prometric or PSI. If you are looking for 10 year recertification, register anytime within 1 year or your expiration date.

Pass the NRCME Test

Once you pass your certification test, the FMCSA will notify you via email and include an official certificate indicating your status as a CME on the national registry.

I have not taken the 10-year RECERT FMCSA exam yet, but I have taken 2 other FMCSA prep courses and signed up for the PASS My Physical Recert Training last week. Dr. David Thorpe is President of Pass My Physical and has worked in occupational medicine for over 30 years, was involved with the development of the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME), and has trained greater than 5000 medical examiners to prepare them to sit for the NRCME certification examination. David is considered a DOT Medical subject matter expert.

Does This Course Work for the NRCME 10 Year Recertification?

Yes! This course is approved for BOTH first time certifications and the 10-year recertification requirement.

Can I Use This Course for the NRCME Initial Certification?

Yes! This course is approved for BOTH first time certifications and the 10-year recertification requirement.

How Does the NRCME 10 Year Recertification Work?

The 10 year recertification training is essentially the same as first time certification.

Begin by completing the NRCME training with Pass My Physical (live or on-demand works!).

Upon completion, log into to your NRCME account and upload your training certificate.

If you are 1 year from your expiration date or less: Contact an approved testing organization (Prometric or PSI) and schedule your exam.

Take and pass the recertification exam before your expiration date (except if your certification expires within 2023. Those expiring in 2023 will be granted extra time in order to complete retraining and testing. The added time will begin with an additional 12 months if your expiration date is in January of 2023, and be reduced by 1 month each successive month up to December of 2023 whereby you will receive only 1 additional month to recertify). If you have an expiration date of 1/1/2024 or later, you must complete recertification by your expiration date OR YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE NATIONAL REGISTRY.

10 Year Recertification - When Can I Start My NRCME Training?

Although you may begin prior, you must complete your NRCME Training with Pass My Physical and testing within your 9th year but prior to your expiration date.

For Example, if your expiration date is November 1, 2025, you must complete your training and register for your NRCME Certification Test after November 1, 2024.

10 Year Recertification - When Can I Take the NRCME Certification Test?

You may start your NRCME Training with Pass My Physical anytime but you must complete training to register for the testing in your 9th year.

For Example, if your expiration date is November 1, 2025, you cannot register for your NRCME Certification Test until November 1, 2024.

What Happens if I Fail My Recertification Exam?

All Medical Examiners currently certified and listed on the National Registry may continue to perform DOT Physicals until their initial certification expires (unless your expiration date is in 2023. Those that expire in 2023 will be granted up to 12 months beginning in January of 2023, decreasing by 1 month each successive month throughout the year with December only being granted 1 additional month).

Therefore, you can fail the recertification exam and continue to perform exams until that date. Furthermore, unlike your initial certification testing where you must wait 30 days to retake the exam, medical examiners who are attempting to recertify no longer must wait the 30 days and can register to take the test again even on the next day!
